As I’ve been researching interactive installation, I will often find things I’m interested in, of all sorts of mediums and materials. What I’m finding is that it’s a whole world unto itself, and I’ve barely scratched the surface. There are endless examples of beautiful, fascinating, and creative installations and sculptures out there. My goal is simply to add to that number.

I’ve been reflecting on what I personally am attracted to as I’m researching and looking through what has been done. I’ve always known that I’m particularly interested in texture as an artist, and it stands to reason that is the case with installation and sculpture, as well. What I wasn’t expecting was the huge amount of installations that use fibers; string, yarn, crochet, weaving… and how attracted I am to all of them. I’ve always enjoyed fibers, and have dabbled in it over the years. But it’s always been just dabbling. Now, I’m wondering if that dabbling could pay off as I embark on this new path.

Crochet has many opportunities, and is very accessible to me in terms of ability, materials, and cost. It’s certainly high on my list to pursue.

I also know that in the long term, I want to create sculptures that invite movement, climbing and interaction, which can certainly be done with crochet. However, I also have my eye on concrete as a material. There’s something about putting your hands on concrete… smooth, but gritty, sun warmed or cold. That texture also has my attention, and I am attracted to the permanence of concrete as well.

Both mediums, concrete and crochet, have many possibilities, just in very different directions. I’m excited to explore both.
