I’ve always felt titling one’s work is very tricky; there’s so much to consider. Your own vision, if it suits the piece, how the title will impact viewers’ perception of the work. It can enlighten them or confuse them. Then there’s the even worse issue of having worked very hard to create something, completing it, and realizing you have no concept of what to call it.
Most of the times I’ve needed to title a work, it’s been a struggle. I’ve always claimed to hate the process. However, with certain pieces, the title just comes without thought. Or perhaps it’s from all of the thought about the conceptual side of the piece; spending so much time thinking about what I’m trying to accomplish that I unconsciously land on what the piece should be called.
Reflecting on it, I’ve found that when I create my own work, with my own concept—not a commission or proposal—it’s much more clear to me what the title should be.
