This is the Mirriam WEbster dictionary’s definition of ‘creativity.’ Personally I don’t find it helpful in actually explaining what creativity actually is or means to an artist. Even going beyond creativity to look up ‘creative’ leaves plenty to be desired.
While objectively all of these definitions are true, I don’t think any of these definitions encompass or express what ‘being creative’ or ‘creativity’ can be. This is my take on what it means from the perspective of a maker, mover, and artist.
Creativity is a choice, the decision to look past the obvious to find a different perspective. Looking past the surface means investigating all possibilities, and staying open to as many options as you can. Creativity requires repetition to synthesize ideas, tenacity to work through them, and discernment to know which ideas to prune out, and which to keep and pursue further. It is a process, a way of working, and a way of thinking. It is a skill that can be learned, taught, and developed, rather than a mysterious talent that only some people are blessed with. Far more than a simple strike of inspiration, creativity is work. It takes time, thought, and practice.
Creativity is not just a noun or an adjective, but a verb.
